In the farmer and climate network, 16 companies work together to become a climate neutral company.
The aim of the Network Farmer Climate Project is threefold:
- With the knowledge that is already available, make 16 companies in arable farming, field vegetables, poultry and pig farming more climate neutral.
- Feedback new current knowledge to policy and possibly include bottlenecks in research.
- Companies and stakeholders are aware of these feasible and effective strategies and methods and are applying them to their companies.
Climate change and agriculture
The global climate is changing through human action. The emission of greenhouse gases increases the natural greenhouse effect and increases the temperature on earth, among other things. This is a major social problem. In recent years, limiting the consequences of climate change has therefore been an important spearhead in government policy.
The enhanced greenhouse effect on Earth is mainly caused by high concentrations of carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4) and nitrous oxide (N2O) in the atmosphere. The CO2 concentrations in the air increase mainly due to the combustion of fossil fuels and, to a lesser extent, due to changed land use such as deforestation. The increase in the concentrations of the main other greenhouse gases, nitrous oxide and methane is mainly related to activities in agriculture.
Ambitions
The project sets ambitious goals for 2013: such as 20% energy savings compared to 2010, 40% of the energy requirement based on own (or purchased) sustainable energy production, 50% reduction of methane and nitrous oxide emissions and, where possible, exploiting opportunities for CO2 capture. . The network has the ambition to tackle and resolve bottlenecks and obstacles on the way to climate neutral.
